Why a broken crown or lost filling needs attention
A filling repairs a damaged area of a tooth, while a crown covers and protects the remaining tooth. Losing either can expose the tooth to food, temperature changes and further damage. The right treatment depends on why the restoration failed and the condition of the tooth underneath.
Even if it does not hurt, arrange a dental assessment. Avoid assuming that a painless tooth is healthy or that a lost crown can simply be glued back into place.
What to do if your crown comes off
- Keep the crown safe. Bring it to your appointment. An intact crown may sometimes be re-cemented after the tooth has been checked.
- Keep your teeth clean. Brush gently with fluoride toothpaste and avoid chewing hard or sticky food on the affected side.
- Avoid anything that triggers sensitivity. Very hot or cold foods and drinks can make the exposed tooth uncomfortable.
- Ask a pharmacist about temporary protection. A dental repair kit may help while you wait. Follow the product instructions and do not force a crown into place.
Never use superglue or household glue in your mouth. A temporary repair does not replace an examination. Read about our care for lost crowns and veneers.
What to do if a filling falls out
Do not try to put the old filling back into the cavity. Keep the tooth clean, avoid biting hard food on it and ask a pharmacist whether a temporary filling kit is suitable. If you need pain relief, ask the pharmacist what is safe for you and follow the packet instructions. Never put aspirin directly against your gum.
A dentist will assess whether a new filling is suitable or whether the tooth needs a different repair. See our dental fillings service for more information.
When to ask for urgent dental care
Contact a dentist promptly if you have a broken or loose restoration. Tell the practice if you also have severe or persistent pain, swelling, fever, or a sharp edge injuring your cheek or tongue. Your symptoms help the dental team decide how quickly you need to be seen.
Go to A&E or call 999 for serious face or jaw injuries, heavy mouth bleeding that will not stop, or severe swelling that affects breathing or opening your eyes. If you cannot access a dentist, NHS 111 can advise on urgent dental care.

How we assess and treat damaged restorations
At your appointment, the dentist will examine the tooth, discuss your symptoms and explain the treatment options. These may include a temporary repair, a new filling, re-cementing a suitable crown or arranging a replacement. If the tooth has deeper damage, other treatment may be needed. Treatment depends on the examination; saving the original restoration is not always possible.
We will explain the proposed treatment and costs before you decide. You can view our emergency dental prices and ask the team to clarify the assessment and booking fees when arranging your visit.

Frequently asked questions
Can a lost crown be used again?
Sometimes. Bring it with you so the dentist can check the crown and the tooth. A damaged crown or a tooth with decay may need a different treatment.
Can I wait if my lost filling does not hurt?
Arrange an assessment rather than waiting for pain. Contact the practice sooner if symptoms develop or worsen.
Can I get a same-day appointment?
Call us to check current availability. Explain what happened and any symptoms so the team can help you arrange appropriate care.
